With more than 20 years of experience living in water (bureaucratic shark breeding) from an early age, Lee Du-ri intuitively and gained insight into the process of life circulation through observation in an aquarium, the mysteries of nature, and the rules of nature. And he saw it as our lives.
Lee Du-ri's work world is based on the reincarnation ideology (輪廻思想) and deals with mythical ideas and enlightenment stemming from human karma.
He featured Asian Arowana as a material for his work.
Asian Arowana is a large freshwater ornamental fish that lives in Southeast Asia (China, Myanmar, Malaysia, etc.), and is famous for its 'dragon-like appearance, high rarity, and price.
The body length is up to 1m, and depending on the scale, it is divided into gold (gold), red (red), and blue (silver), and each color has a symbol of wealth, health, and chasing ghosts.
It has a habit of holding eggs in the mouth (mouse breeder), so it has the nickname of "bite the lady's wine", and the male hatches it in the mouth.
As an endangered species, it is internationally protected and is prohibited from importing and distributing without permission from the Ministry of Environment, and Asian Arowana is called the "Emperor's Fish" among ornamental fish and has a special meaning in both symbolism, rarity and management difficulty.
Through these characteristics of Asian Arowana, the work expresses the spiritual power inherent in the talisman energy, and is depicted as a guide like a 差使 who conveys the will of God, encompassing the world and the underworld. Based on the reincarnation and karma of life, the artist gives the meaning of communication between the past and the present life of the past to the picture.
< 영원한 삶 >
이두리는 어릴적부터 20여년의 오랜물생활(관상어 사육) 경험으로 수족관 내에 관찰을 통한 생명순환의 과정과 자연의 신비 그리고 자연의 규칙을 직관하고 통찰하였다. 그리고 그것을 우리의 인생과 같이보았다.
이두리의 작품세계는 윤회사상(輪廻思想)에 바탕을 두고있으며, 인간의 업(karma)에서 비롯된 신화적 관념과 깨달음에 관한 내용을 다루고있다.
그는 작품소재로 아시안 아로와나(Asian Arowana)를 등장시켰다.
아시안 아로와나는 동남아시아(중국, 미얀마, 말레이시아 등)에 서식하는 대형 민물 관상어로, ‘용’을 닮은 외모와 높은 희귀성, 가격으로 유명하다.
몸길이 최대 1m, 비늘에 따라 금용(금색), 홍용(적색), 청용(은색) 등으로 구분되며, 각 색상은 부와 건강, 귀신을 쫓는다는 상징이 있다.
입에 알을 품는 습성(마우스 브리더)이 있어 ‘여의주를 문 용’이라는 별명을 갖고, 수컷이 입에서 부화시킨다.
멸종위기종으로, 국제적으로 보호받고 있어 환경부 허가 없이 수입·유통이 금지되어 있으며, 아시안 아로와나는 관상어 중에서도 ‘황제의 물고기’로 불리며, 상징성과 희귀성, 관리 난이도 모두에서 특별한 의미를 지니고 있다.
아시안 아로와나의 이러한 특징들을 매개로 작품에서는 부적적인 기운이 내재된 신령스러운 힘을 표현하기도하며, 이승과 저승을 아우르며 신의 뜻을 전달하는 차사(差使)와 같은 안내자 역할로 그려지기도 한다. 이처럼 시공간을 초월하는 생명순환 원리를 생명의 윤회와 카르마를 토대로 과거와 현재를 연결하는 전생의 업과 현생의 삶의 그 소통의 의미를 작가는 그림에 부여하고 있다.
